Cartridge seal widely adaptable
Featured in 1997 Chemical Processing Magazine
Field-repairable mechanical seal works with a gas or liquid barrier with no change in hardware.
This modular, multi-seal cartridge mechanical seal provides a very high degree of flexibility in configurations to work in a wide variety of applications,” raves one pumping expert on the Vaaler Awards judging panel.
The series of seals universally adapts to such rotating machinery as centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, mixers and agitators.
The cartridge mechanical seal incorporates all of the following as standard: double balance (the seal can handle pressure and vacuum equally well), stationary design (no rotating springs), a flush gland with multi-port injection, and is completely field repairable.
The modular design allows a customer to configure a double seal, tandem seal, concentric seal, triplex seal and gas barrier seal from one collection of interchangeable parts.
In one application at a anoleic fatty acid plant, average seal life was two weeks. A weak rotating element with high shaft deflection on the existing pump was fixed, but there were still seal failure problems. Installation of the award winning seal on a n ANSI process pump, operation at 3,600 rpm, was so successful the plant expects savings of almost $18,000 per year in direct maintenance cost and replacement parts cost for this one application.
The various choices in this family of off-the-shelf, mass produced cartridge seal offers the benefits of made to order seals.
This concentric double mechanical seal in the series also allows the installation of two seals in the same axial space as one.
The seal is particularly suited for application with little or no “seal chamber” room such as with many positive displacement pumps with high shaft deflection where it is important to keep the seals as close to the bearing as possible.
